Steam users have another pair of games to grab for absolutely nothing, but there is not much time to waste. Space Menace and Deadshot are currently available as free-to-keep games, with both promotions ending on September 23.
Unlike a traditional Free Weekend, these games remain in your Steam library after the promotion ends. You only need to claim them while the offer is active.
Both giveaways are scheduled to end on September 23 at 10:00 AM PT / 1:00 PM ET.
Space Menace Is Free to Keep
The first game available is Space Menace, a science-fiction strategy game that puts players in control of a captain trying to build a name for themselves across the galaxy.
You begin with limited resources and a small operation, but the goal is to gradually expand your influence. Players can complete freelance missions, collect salvage, manage resources and eventually build a larger fleet.
Ships can be customized as you progress, while relationships with different factions can influence how your journey develops.
Combat takes place from a top-down perspective and can involve your own fleet alongside friendly ships and space stations.
Reception for Space Menace has been mixed. Based on the figures available for the promotion, around 58% of its 39 Steam user reviews are positive. That is a relatively small number of reviews, however, so players may want to make up their own minds while the game costs nothing.
Deadshot Brings Some Old-School FPS Action
The second giveaway is Deadshot, a retro-inspired first-person shooter built around the style of classic PC shooters.
Its influences include games such as Half-Life, Doom and Quake, with fast combat and environments ranging from underground tunnels to laboratories and buildings.
Players take control of a soldier fighting through a mutant apocalypse.
The campaign contains three chapters with six levels each, giving players a total of 18 levels to work through. Deadshot also features seven weapons and five weapon attachments.
Its Steam reception is currently positive, with all 12 user reviews included in the available figures recommending the game. As with Space Menace, the number of reviews is extremely small, so that percentage should not be treated as representative of a large player base.
Still, when the price is zero, there is little stopping curious FPS fans from adding it to their libraries and trying it themselves.
These Are Free to Keep, Not Just Free to Play
Steam runs several different types of promotions, and the distinction matters.
Free Weekends temporarily allow players to access a game before losing access when the event ends. Free-to-Keep promotions are different.
Once Space Menace or Deadshot has been successfully added to your Steam account during the promotion, it remains part of your library after the giveaway ends.
You do not have to finish or even install the games during the promotional period. Claiming them before the deadline is what matters.
Dying Light Players Have Another Freebie
There is also another free offer currently running for players who own Dying Light: The Beast.
The Discharge Weapon Pack DLC can be claimed for free until September 24. Because this is DLC rather than a standalone game, players need the required base game to use it.
That gives Steam users three different freebies to look at this week, although the two full games have the more urgent September 23 deadline.
More Steam Freebies Could Still Appear
Steam’s giveaway schedule is not completely predictable. Publishers can launch short free-to-keep promotions throughout the week, meaning Space Menace and Deadshot may not necessarily be the final additions.
Thursday is also commonly when new Free Weekend promotions begin, potentially giving PC players even more games to try later this week.
For now, Space Menace and Deadshot are the ones to claim first. With the deadline arriving on September 23, anyone interested should add them to their Steam library before the promotion disappears.
