XLGAMES is bringing ArcheAge back with another MMORPG, and this time the studio appears to be aiming much closer to the original game’s identity.
ArcheAge S: Strait of Freedom is a new PC MMORPG planned for a global release in 2027. Kakao Games and XLGAMES describe it as a title that will carry forward the core philosophy and freedom that defined the original ArcheAge.
That alone makes the project worth watching.
ArcheAge Chronicles originally began as ArcheAge 2, but it later moved toward an online action RPG structure. Because of that shift, ArcheAge S now appears to be the game taking on the role of a more traditional ArcheAge successor.
ArcheAge S Could Be Project X7
The reveal becomes even more interesting when compared with earlier reports about Project X7.
Before ArcheAge S was announced, Project X7 was described as a PC MMORPG under development at XLGAMES. Reports claimed that it would focus on sandbox gameplay, player-driven economics and open-world PvP.
Several details now match ArcheAge S:
- PC MMORPG
- 2027 release target
- Kim Kyung-tae involved
- Focus on ArcheAge-style freedom
- Sandbox systems
- Player-driven economy
- Open-world PvP
Because of those similarities, Project X7 and ArcheAge S appear closely connected.
However, XLGAMES has not officially confirmed that every Project X7 detail applies to ArcheAge S. For now, some of that information should still be treated cautiously.
Unreal Engine 5 Could Be Involved
Earlier Project X7 reports also claimed that the game was being developed with Unreal Engine 5.
If ArcheAge S and Project X7 are indeed the same project, Unreal Engine 5 could power the new MMORPG.
That could allow XLGAMES to create a much larger and more detailed world than the original game offered.
Still, graphics will only be part of the equation.
For ArcheAge S to succeed, the gameplay systems will matter far more.
The Original ArcheAge Formula Could Return
One of ArcheAge’s biggest strengths was the freedom it gave players.
The original MMORPG allowed players to:
- Build houses
- Farm
- Craft
- Trade
- Sail across the ocean
- Take part in PvP
- Join guild conflicts
- Become pirates
- Transport valuable cargo
Those systems gave players reasons to interact with the world beyond normal questing.
Trade runs became especially memorable because transporting cargo came with real risk. Players could earn more by taking dangerous routes, but hostile players could attack them along the way.
That combination of economy, travel and PvP helped ArcheAge stand out.
If ArcheAge S brings back those ideas, it could appeal strongly to players who felt that ArcheAge Chronicles moved too far away from the original formula.
PvP Could Play a Major Role
Open-world PvP also appears to be an important part of the project.
That would make sense for a game inspired by the original ArcheAge, where guilds could fight over territory, resources and trade routes.
Naval combat added even more danger.
Players could sail across the world, defend cargo, attack other ships or live as pirates.
If ArcheAge S brings back that style of gameplay, it could restore one of the franchise’s most recognizable features.
However, XLGAMES has not yet confirmed exactly how PvP will work.
Housing, Farming and Naval Gameplay Are Still Unconfirmed
Several major ArcheAge systems remain unanswered.
XLGAMES has not yet confirmed whether ArcheAge S will include:
- Player housing
- Farming
- Trade packs
- Naval combat
- Piracy
- Guild warfare
- Sieges
- Crime systems
- Labor Points
These features will likely determine how closely ArcheAge S follows the original game.
Housing and farming were especially important because they connected directly to crafting and trading.
Meanwhile, naval gameplay gave the ocean a real purpose rather than turning it into empty space.
For many longtime players, those systems are just as important as combat.
ArcheAge Chronicles Is Still Separate
ArcheAge S does not replace ArcheAge Chronicles.
Instead, XLGAMES now appears to be taking the franchise in two different directions.
ArcheAge Chronicles focuses more heavily on action combat and cooperative PvE.
ArcheAge S, meanwhile, appears closer to a traditional sandbox MMORPG.
That separation could ultimately help both games.
Players looking for action-oriented gameplay can follow ArcheAge Chronicles, while those wanting a more traditional ArcheAge experience can look toward ArcheAge S.
Monetization Will Be the Biggest Question
The biggest concern surrounding ArcheAge S is likely to be monetization.
The original ArcheAge had ambitious gameplay systems, but its reputation suffered heavily because of monetization and pay-to-win concerns.
The Labor system also became controversial because it limited crafting, gathering and other economic activities.
Because of that history, many players will want clear answers before getting too excited.
XLGAMES has not yet confirmed whether ArcheAge S will use:
- Free-to-play
- Buy-to-play
- Subscription
- Battle passes
- Premium membership
- Cosmetic microtransactions
For many former ArcheAge players, the business model could decide whether they return.
ArcheAge S Could Be the Sequel Players Expected
ArcheAge S currently sounds much closer to what many players originally expected from ArcheAge 2.
The project appears to focus on:
- Sandbox gameplay
- Player freedom
- Open-world PvP
- Player-driven economics
- Social interaction
- Large-scale conflict
Those ideas sit much closer to the original game’s identity.
However, XLGAMES still has plenty to prove.
The studio needs to show that it understands what made ArcheAge special while also fixing the problems that hurt the original game.
If it can bring back the freedom, trading, PvP and sandbox systems without repeating the same monetization mistakes, ArcheAge S: Strait of Freedom could finally become the true successor that ArcheAge fans have been waiting for.
