Agent 64: Spies Never Die Launches August 11 With a GoldenEye-Inspired Retro Shooter Experience

Fans of classic first-person shooters finally have a release date to circle on the calendar. Agent 64: Spies Never Die officially launches on August 11, 2026, bringing back the fast-paced action, split-screen multiplayer, and secret agent atmosphere that defined the Nintendo 64 era. Developed by Replicant D6, the game has spent more than five years in development and aims to capture everything players loved about iconic spy shooters while introducing modern improvements.

Although the Steam page confirms the launch date, the developer has yet to reveal the game’s price or pre-order options.

Five and a Half Years of Development

Agent 64: Spies Never Die has been a long-term passion project for Replicant D6. According to the developer, the game represents five and a half years of work, with multiple public tests helping shape the final release.

Players first experienced the game during Steam Next Fest 2021, where an early alpha introduced its retro-inspired gameplay. A more polished demo followed in 2022, while earlier this year players participated in an online multiplayer playtest before another updated single-player demo became available.

These repeated testing phases allowed the community to provide feedback throughout development, helping refine gameplay ahead of launch.

A Love Letter to GoldenEye and Perfect Dark

From the moment gameplay begins, it’s clear what inspired Agent 64: Spies Never Die. The game embraces the style of legendary late-1990s console shooters, complete with low-poly environments, chunky character models, and mission-based objectives.

Rather than simply copying the past, the developers blend nostalgic visuals with modern lighting effects, creating a game that feels authentic while still looking polished on today’s hardware.

Players step into the role of Secret Agent John Walter, completing 14 story missions filled with espionage, action, and classic spy-movie moments. The overall presentation pays tribute to the era that made games like GoldenEye and Perfect Dark household names.

Multiplayer Brings Back Split-Screen Gaming

One of the biggest selling points is the game’s focus on multiplayer.

Agent 64 includes both local split-screen and online multiplayer, allowing up to eight players to compete together. For players who prefer teamwork over competition, the entire campaign can also be completed in co-op, making it easy to experience every mission alongside a friend.

This combination of local and online play gives the title a feature set rarely seen in modern indie shooters.

Paradox Mode Adds Massive Replay Value

Beyond the main campaign, Agent 64 introduces Paradox Mode, a customizable game mode featuring more than 70 modifiers and classic cheat options.

Players can dramatically change the experience with options such as:

  • Big Heads
  • Slow Bullet Speeds
  • No Reload
  • Dozens of additional gameplay modifiers

These settings encourage experimentation and offer countless ways to replay missions long after the campaign has been completed.

Can Agent 64 Live Up to the Classics?

Positioning a game alongside legendary shooters such as GoldenEye and Perfect Dark naturally creates high expectations. Those titles remain some of the most beloved console shooters ever released, and nostalgia alone is rarely enough to satisfy modern players.

However, Agent 64 appears determined to deliver more than nostalgia. Its lengthy development, multiple community playtests, full co-op campaign, split-screen support, online multiplayer, and extensive gameplay modifiers make it one of the more ambitious retro-inspired shooters arriving on Steam this year.

Whether it can truly capture the magic of the classics will become clear when players finally get their hands on the full release on August 11, 2026.
