Call of Duty fans finally have official confirmation that two of the franchise’s most beloved entries are making their way to PlayStation consoles. Treyarch has announced that Iron Galaxy Studios has handled the ports of Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, with both titles scheduled to arrive sometime in July.
While an exact release date has yet to be revealed, the announcement puts an end to weeks of speculation surrounding the long-rumored re-releases.
Black Ops Classics Return to PlayStation
For many players, the original Black Ops remains one of the most memorable entries in the series. Its campaign, multiplayer, and especially the fan-favorite Zombies mode helped cement the game as one of the defining shooters of its era.
The title also introduced features such as Wager Matches and several multiplayer maps that continue to be remembered fondly by long-time players.
Black Ops 2 built upon that success with an ambitious campaign featuring branching story paths and multiple endings. Its multiplayer experience is still considered by many fans to be among the best in the series, thanks to its balanced gameplay and iconic maps.
Although both games have been available on modern Xbox systems through backward compatibility for years, PlayStation players have not had the same opportunity until now.
Several Questions Remain
Despite confirming the ports, Treyarch has not yet shared several key details.
At the moment, it remains unclear:
- Whether the games are releasing on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
- If any visual enhancements or additional features are included.
- Whether the original DLC packs will be bundled with the games or sold separately.
- If physical editions are planned.
- Whether similar native versions are being considered for Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles.
These unanswered questions are likely to be addressed closer to launch.
Earlier Leaks Proven Accurate
Rumors about PlayStation versions of Black Ops and Black Ops 2 have circulated for weeks. Datamining discoveries and backend information hinted that the titles were preparing for release, and many fans expected an official announcement.
Treyarch’s confirmation has now validated those reports, although the studio chose not to provide a specific release day.
Community Interest Could Shape Future Plans
The return of two of the most celebrated Call of Duty games is expected to generate significant excitement within the community. Demand for the titles could potentially influence future platform support or additional releases.
For now, fans can look forward to more information regarding pricing, release dates, DLC availability, and supported systems as July approaches.
