Epic Games Store Gives Away Viewfinder for December 29–30

The Epic Games Store has revealed Viewfinder as its free game for December 29–30, continuing its 2025 holiday giveaway event. The game is available to claim for free until December 30 at 8am PT / 11am ET / 5pm CET, after which it will be replaced by the next mystery title.

This marks the first time Viewfinder has ever been offered for free on the Epic Games Store, making it a notable addition to this year’s giveaway lineup.

What Is Viewfinder?

Developed by Sad Owl Studios, Viewfinder is a minimalist puzzle-platformer with a strong conceptual twist. The core mechanic revolves around aligning 2D photographs with the 3D world, allowing images to be transformed into real, walkable geometry.

Often compared to Portal for its clever environmental puzzles, Viewfinder focuses more on perception, spatial reasoning, and creative problem-solving rather than narrative-driven gameplay. The game launched in July 2023 and was widely praised for its originality and execution.

At launch, Viewfinder achieved:

  • An OpenCritic average score of 83
  • A 90% recommendation rate
  • Over 5,400 user reviews on Steam, where it currently holds a “Very Positive” rating

Where It Fits in Epic’s Holiday Giveaway

Viewfinder is listed as the 13th title revealed in Epic’s 2025 holiday giveaway and is described by Epic as the 16th free game since the promotion began earlier this month. Some aggregated tracking reports also place it as the 89th title claimable by Epic Games Store users in 2025 overall.

The giveaway event is nearing its conclusion, with two more daily mystery games scheduled:

  • Mystery Game #14: December 30–31
  • Mystery Game #15: December 31–January 1

Giveaway Stats So Far

As of December 28, Epic’s holiday promotion has delivered:

  • 13 free games
  • Total reported value: $387.87
  • Average value per game: $29.84
  • Average OpenCritic score: 80.3

Recent additions to the lineup include Cassette Beasts and SKALD, while earlier high-profile releases such as Hogwarts Legacy and The Callisto Protocol set a strong tone for the event.

With the final mystery drops still ahead, past Epic patterns suggest the promotion could end with one or two higher-profile titles to close out the year.
