Pokemon GO Adds Up to 400 Free Item Slots in Surprise Update

A Major Boost to Item Storage — Completely Free

Pokemon GO players logging in today may notice something unexpected: their item bags are suddenly much bigger. A new update has quietly added up to 400 free item slots through revamped level-up rewards, dramatically increasing storage capacity without requiring any PokeCoins.

These expanded rewards are retroactive, meaning players instantly receive the additional space based on the highest level they’ve reached. For high-level players—especially those at Level 80—the update grants the full 400 slots immediately.

This marks a significant shift, as bag upgrades previously required players to spend PokeCoins, with each 50-slot expansion costing 200 coins.

Why the Update Was Needed

Item overflow has been a recurring frustration within the community. A maxed-out bag prevents players from:

  • Spinning PokeStops
  • Progressing Research Tasks
  • Receiving daily bonuses
  • Picking up event items

While a June update raised the paid storage maximum for both items and Pokémon, it didn’t solve the core issue: players constantly hitting capacity during gameplay.

The situation worsened after the October 15 level-cap expansion, which increased the maximum player level from 50 to 80. Anyone who had previously reached level 25 or higher was immediately bumped up in level. The problem? Each sudden level-up delivered item rewards—often dozens at once—instantly overflowing the bags of countless players.

Many expressed frustration when the influx of rewards made the game temporarily unplayable unless they deleted items they would’ve preferred to keep.

A Long-Awaited Fix — But Not for Everyone

The new update clearly aims to resolve the overflow problems caused by the October changes. By increasing storage for free, Pokémon GO ensures players no longer have to sacrifice item space just to interact with PokeStops or complete tasks.

However, not everyone is satisfied. Players who already deleted valuable items to keep their bags functional say the fix came too late. Some cleared out entire stacks of potions, berries, revives, or raid passes just to continue playing normally.

There is also growing community interest in extending similar storage upgrades to Pokémon storage, which remains unchanged despite the new level-up system.

A Positive Step Forward

While overdue for some, the free storage expansion is a widely welcomed improvement that helps stabilize daily gameplay, especially after the disruptive October update. Lower-level players will also benefit as they continue progressing, gaining additional space automatically as they climb toward the new level cap.

Whether similar improvements will come to Pokémon storage remains to be seen, but for now, players finally have the breathing room they’ve been asking for.
