Niantic has announced the Pokémon GO Fossil Research Day, scheduled for Saturday, August 2, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. local time. This limited-time event will feature increased wild encounters with fossil-themed Pokémon, enhanced Shiny rates, and a mix of free and paid research tasks.
Featured Fossil Pokémon and Increased Shiny Rates
During the three-hour event, Trainers will encounter the following Pokémon more frequently in the wild:
- Tyrunt
- Amaura
- Omanyte
- Kabuto
- Lileep
- Anorith
- Cranidos
- Shieldon
- Tirtouga
- Archen
Tyrunt and Amaura will be available as guaranteed Field Research encounters, with boosted Shiny chances. The remaining fossil Pokémon also have an increased chance of appearing as Shiny variants during the event.
Field Research and Paid Timed Research
Players can complete event-themed Field Research tasks for encounters and rewards. Additionally, a paid Timed Research will be available in the in-game shop for $1.99, providing access to more tasks, items, and additional encounters with Tyrunt and Amaura.
Important notes for the paid Timed Research:
- Must be completed by 5:00 p.m. local time on August 2.
- Tickets can be gifted to friends with a Friendship level of Great Friends or higher.
- A Fossil Research Day Ultra Ticket Box will be sold in the Pokémon GO web store for $1.99. It includes the event ticket and three Max Revives.

With a rich lineup of events in August, Pokémon GO Trainers will have plenty of opportunities to catch rare Pokémon, complete research tasks, and stock up on valuable in-game items. Fossil Research Day, in particular, offers a great chance to bolster collections and hunt down elusive Shiny fossil Pokémon.
